The monthly meeting of the West Central Georgia Shutterbugs will be at TUAC’s new location on the square in downtown Thomaston (201 S Center Street) at 6:30 on Tuesday, June 11. Please come join us in welcoming Billie Mathis as our guest speaker.

Billie will speak to our group of photographers about her background in photography and in using Photoshop with it. She will also share her knowledge of some of the techniques she uses to create the photo art that she sells. She'll demonstrate some tutorials that will show how to take a simple image and transform it into an art project that will result in something more than just a photo - something that can be framed and used as home decor. Afterwards she will conduct a question and answer session for everyone. 

For our Tuesday, May 14 monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m., West Central Georgia Shutterbug members Harolyn Castleberry and Melba Brown will present a slideshow of pictures they took of Vermont last fall while on a photo tour with John Baker of Travel Images.

Greg Foster, an award-winning, highly-acclaimed photographer, will speak to the West Central Georgia Shutterbugs when they meet on Tuesday, April 9^th, 6:30 p.m. at TUAC (Thomaston-Upson Arts Council) Gallery, located on the courthouse square in Thomaston. Greg grew up in Griffin, graduated from the University of Georgia in 1983, had a highly success career as a photographer, and then he, along with his wife and three young children, moved back to Griffin in 2007, after living in metro Atlanta for almost 20 years.

He began his career working for daily newspapers, but soon moved on to magazine work, specializing in portraits and feature stories. His clients have included Sports Illustrated, Fortune, Time, Forbes, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and a wide variety of other publications. He has worked across the U. S. , as well as in a handful of foreign countries, and has to his credit several hundred covers and front page photos. His work has also appeared in a variety of books, including The NBA at 50, A Day in the Life of the National Hockey League, and the NBA’s Best Shots, as well as in television documentaries by ESPN, Fox Sports, NFL Films and CBS.

Greg has also worked on assignment for wire services and newspapers, covering sporting events such as the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Masters, the NBA Playoff, and Major League Baseball’s All-Star game. He has also worked on assignment for a variety of companies doing corporate, annual report, and advertising photography for corporations such as The Coca-Cola Company, Norfolk-Southern Railroads, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, HBO, and Kodak.

In 2004, one of Greg’s Sports Illustrated cover photos was included in the magazine’s 50^th Anniversary issue showcasing the magazine’s greatest photos. Some of his other honors have included awards in the International Pictures of the Year competition, selection for the Communication Arts Photography Annual, a variety of awards at the annual Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, and being named Georgia Photographer of the Year.

WCGS Meeting November 13

Come join us for the last meeting in 2012 of the West Central Georgia Shutterbugs on Tuesday, November 13 at TUAC on the square in Thomaston, to hear Eric Bowles.

Eric is an Atlanta based nature photographer specializing in the Southeastern United States. His work has been published in magazines, newspapers, and commercial publications. Eric’s work has been exhibited in private collections.

One of his specialty areas is infrared photography. Eric’s digital IR photography provides a unique perspective. Using a converted Nikon DSLR, infrared photography provides a way to create distinctive images. 

Eric is a member and supporter of GNPA, PPA (Professional Photographers of America), NANPA (North American Nature Photographers Association), GNPA (Georgia Nature Photography Association), Chattahoochee Nature Center, Audubon, and Atlanta Audubon Society.  He is on the board of GNPA and Marketing/Communications Chair for NANPA.

His presentation – The Magic of Infrared Photography – will share IR images and talk about how photographers can explore this old medium with digital cameras.

Two Shutterbugs Claim Prizes at the Georgia National Fair

In October, at the Georgia National Fair, Marcia Fisher won two 4th places in the Masters Division for her photos in colored flowers and B/W still life. Lora Watson received a 2nd, 3rd and 6th in the novice division. Let's all congratulate them next time we see them for their accomplishments!
