October 2014 Meeting

The Shutterbugs’ next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 14th, 6:30 p.m.  at the Hightower Memorial Library, 800 West Gordon Street, Thomaston (across the street from Upson Regional Medical Center). During the program, various members will show samples of their work and ask fellow photographers to provide feedback as to what could have been done to make the image even better, what the strengths of the image are, creative editing suggestions, etc. Anyone interested in photography is welcome to come learn more about ways to create a really good photo.

The Thomaston-Upson Arts Center (TUAC) held a reception on Sept. 9th for the West Central Georgia Shutterbugs, whose work is on display there. After the many attendees had voted for their favorite image, the votes were tallied. Two images taken by King Davis tied for First Place. Other photographers’ images that were among the top “vote getters” were: 2nd place: Dianne Kelly, Marcia Fisher, King Davis; 3rd place: Melba Brown and Rachel McClelland. Congratulations to each of them and to all the photographers whose beautiful images remain on display at TUAC until the end of September. Kudos to Marcia Fisher and Rachel McClelland who sold one of their images during the reception.

Speaking on behalf of all the Shutterbugs, Johnnie Ann Gaskill, one of the charter members, said, “We are so grateful to TUAC for supporting us in various ways ever since we organized in January 2006. We also appreciate the newspapers and the local radio station for publicizing our monthly meetings and special opportunities, such as our recent exhibit at Callaway Gardens. And we thank those who stop by to see our work and to comment favorably on it. For example, Patsy Perdue said, “The Shutterbugs have a unique way of illuminating the ordinary world in an extraordinary way so that all who view their works can enjoy the experience. The photographs on exhibit at the TUAC Gallery are wonderful examples of their talents."

Such support encourages us to keep on developing our skills and to continue reaching out to other photographers who want to learn.

Seminar and TUAC Exhibit

Two members of the West Central Georgia Shutterbugs recently attended a photography seminar led by Darrell Gulin, a Seattle-based photographer who is one of Canon’s prestigious “Explorers of Light.” The seminar was hosted by the Photographic Society of Chattanooga. During the reception that was held the evening before the all-day seminar, Darrell posed with Johnnie Ann Gaskill (left) and Marcia Fisher. (Photo taken by Mark Gilliland.) Samples of Darrell’s photography may be viewed on http://gulinphoto.com/.

Photographs taken by Johnnie and Marcia will be among those on display during the Shutterbugs’ annual exhibit at the Thomaston-Upson Arts Council (TUAC) Gallery, located at 201 South Center Street in Thomaston.  The exhibit kicks off with a reception on Tuesday, Sept. 9th, 5:30-7:00 p.m. and will be open the entire month of Sept. and may be viewed during TUAC’s regular business hours (T, TH, F, 10-5; Wed., 10-noon; closed Mondays and weekends).
